How toolshare Works

Renting or listing takes minutes. Here's how the whole thing works.

As a Renter
1

Create an account

Sign up with Google, Apple, or email — takes about a minute. If a friend referred you, enter their code at signup and you'll both get $5 credit.

2

Find what you need

Browse by category, search by keyword, or use the map. Every listing shows the daily rate, photos, and the lister's rating. Some listings have multiple units available — you can book more than one at a time.

3

Verify your phone (first rental only)

Before your first request, we'll send a one-time verification code by text. This protects every lister on the platform. You'll never be asked again.

4

Pick dates and bundle add-ons

Select your rental window. Once dates are set, you'll see other active listings from the same lister — you can add them to your request so everything moves in one booking. If the lister has a bundle discount set, it applies automatically.

5

Request and pay

Pay the full rental total when you send the request. If the lister declines, or you cancel before pickup, you get a full refund. No partial charges.

6

Coordinate pickup in chat

Once approved, message the lister directly through in-app chat. Propose a pickup time; they confirm it. The agreed time is saved on the rental so you both have it.

7

Pick up the item

The lister starts the handoff. If a security deposit is set, the hold goes on your card at this moment — not at booking. Confirm receipt and the rental becomes active.

8

Return it

Either of you can initiate the return; the other confirms. On a clean return, the deposit hold is released automatically. You'll be prompted to leave a review.

As a Lister
1

List your item — free

Add photos, write a description, set your daily rate (plus optional weekly and monthly rates), and configure minimum and maximum rental days. Delivery is optional — set your own fee. Listing is always free.

2

Block your away dates

Going on holiday or away for a stretch? Add unavailable date ranges from your dashboard. They apply account-wide — every one of your listings will show those dates as blocked automatically.

3

Optional: set a bundle discount

Enable a bundle discount on your listings. When a renter adds more than one of your items to a request, the discount applies automatically. Renters save a bit; you move more in one booking.

4

Approve or decline requests

You'll be notified when a request comes in. Review the renter's profile and ratings, see exactly what they're booking and for how long, then approve or decline. Declines trigger an automatic full refund to the renter.

5

Hand it over

Coordinate the pickup time in chat. When you're face to face, start the handoff — that's when the renter's deposit hold is placed. The renter confirms receipt, and the rental clock starts.

6

Get it back and get paid

Either of you can start the return; the other confirms. Your payout is sent: you keep 90% of the rental subtotal, plus 100% of any delivery fee. The deposit hold is released on a clean return.

Both renting and listing? Your dashboard has a Renting / Listing toggle so you can switch between your active rentals and your listings without hunting through two separate views.

Built on Trust

The details that make toolshare safe for both sides of every rental.

Lister Protection Policy

If a renter damages or loses your item, toolshare's Lister Protection Policy may cover documented repair or replacement costs.

Phone-verified renters

Every renter verifies their phone before their first rental. Ratings and reviews from previous rentals are visible on every profile.

Deposit at handoff, not at booking

If a lister sets a security deposit, it's placed as a hold on the renter's card at the moment of handoff — not when the request is approved. Released automatically on a clean return.

Referral credits

Share your referral link from the dashboard. When a friend makes their first rental, you both get $5 in account credit.

Two-step handoff and return

Neither the handoff nor the return completes until both sides confirm. This protects both parties — there's never a "I handed it over but they didn't confirm" grey area.

Dispute resolution

If something goes wrong, our support team mediates between listers and renters to reach a fair resolution.
